First published in 1961, Father Charles J. Carmody's Learning to Serve contains everything a young man needs in order to serve the traditional Latin Mass—but it goes well beyond the practical details. Serving at the altar is an honor and a privilege, and boys must learn more than just responses and rubrics; they must also cultivate the character, reverence, and sense of responsibility that such service demands.
Each of the 25 illustrated lessons begins with a lively discussion of the character and duties of an altar boy. Latin responses are introduced gradually in an easy-to-learn phonetic form, followed by instruction in the rubrics. Review questions and practical exercises reinforce each lesson, while a useful appendix provides additional prayers, responses, and detailed instructions for serving.
Suitable for classroom instruction or independent study, Learning to Serve is an excellent resource for prospective altar servers and those responsible for their training.
