A Child's True Story of Jesus is not merely a coloring book, or the usual activity book filled with mazes, word searches and puzzles. This is an activity book in the truest sense of the word.
First published in 1928, it was created according to the principle of “learning by doing.” After hearing each lesson, the child finds the picture that belongs to it and uses it to retell the story in his own words. Then he colors and cuts out the picture, matches it with a simplified written account, and pastes both into the book. Instead of merely reading the story of Our Lord, the child helps to build it.
The original book provided the materials for this ingenious method, but no instructions or teacher narratives for putting them to use. For our newly edited edition, we reconstructed the intended method from contemporary educational sources and supplied the missing lesson material, adapted chiefly from the works of Mother Mary Loyola, with additional material from Father Joseph A. Dunney.
Its 57 lessons begin with the Life of Christ and His Sacrifice on Calvary, then lead into Confession and Holy Communion, and finally through the parts of the Mass. The result is a hands-on course in the Faith particularly well suited to preparation for First Confession and First Holy Communion.
