This beautifully illustrated book, with its companion, My Picture Book of First Confession, was originally written by a Dutch religious, Brother Maria Cassianus Versteeg, as one among a series of books for children printed by their Orphanage Printing House.

The original Dutch needed a good deal of adaptation during the translation process, so in reconstructing the text, we borrowed heavily from the work of Mother Mary Loyola, who would have been a rough contemporary.

The result is a concise yet engaging preparation for First Holy Communion that begins with the two things a child most needs to understand: who comes to us in Holy Communion, and why He comes. Through beautiful pictures and simple explanations, children follow Jesus from His throne in Heaven to Bethlehem, Calvary and the Last Supper, discovering that the same Jesus who loved us enough to become man and die for us remains hidden in the Sacred Host so that He may come into our own hearts.

Along the way, they learn how to prepare themselves to receive Him with faith, reverence and love—and, perhaps most importantly, what to do with those precious moments afterward, when Jesus has come to be their Guest.

Note: the verses in this book can be found set to music in our Child's Book of Hymns.

NOTE: Once a child understands the meaning of Holy Communion, First Communion Days and True Stories for First Communicants offers a wonderful next step: true stories of children whose love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament shows what those lessons can look like when lived.
