This beautifully illustrated book, with its companion, My Picture Book of First Communion, was originally written by a Dutch religious, Brother Maria Cassianus Versteeg, as one among a series of books for children printed by their Orphanage Printing House.
The original Dutch needed a good deal of adaptation during the translation process, so in reconstructing the text, we borrowed heavily from the work of Mother Mary Loyola, who would have been a rough contemporary.
The result is a concise yet engaging preparation for First Confession in which vivid pictures make the unseen world of the soul understandable to even very young children. They see the white garment of grace received at Baptism, the stains made by sin, the loving care of their Guardian Angel, and the joy of a soul made clean again in Confession. Along the way, they learn how to examine their conscience, make an act of contrition, confess their sins, and give thanks afterward—not simply as steps to be memorized, but as the means Our Lord has given them to put things right and begin again.
Simple and accessible enough for a young child, it makes an ideal introduction to the Sacrament and a natural companion to Mother Mary Loyola's more extensive First Confession.
