To Live Is Christ is the Eighth Grade textbook in the Our Holy Faith series, bringing the study of Catholic doctrine to its practical fulfillment in the Christian life.
This is the Student Textbook for the Eighth Grade.
What does it mean to live as a Catholic? Knowing the truths of our Faith is essential, but knowledge alone is not enough. We must learn to put those truths into practice, cooperating with God's grace so that our daily lives become ever more closely united to the life of Christ.
Building upon the foundations laid in earlier grades, To Live Is Christ develops the teachings of the second half of the Revised Baltimore Catechism No. 2, with particular emphasis on the Commandments, the Sacraments, and the means by which we grow in holiness.
The course is divided into five units:
-
Christ Teaches Us Through His Church — A review of the fundamental truths of the Creed, establishing the foundation for Christian living.
-
The Laws of Love Are the Laws of Living — The Commandments of God and His Church, showing how obedience to God's law is an expression of love for Him and our neighbor.
-
Living Through Christ, With Christ, In Christ — The Sacraments, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and the life of grace through which we are united to Christ.
-
Christ Works Through Us — Our Christian vocation, the works of mercy, and the ways in which Christ calls us to serve Him in others.
-
Sanctification Through the Sacramentals and Prayer — The sacramentals, prayer, and the means by which we seek God's grace and grow in holiness.
Throughout the course, explanations of Catholic doctrine are accompanied by illustrations, catechism questions and answers, review exercises, and practical suggestions for applying the Faith to everyday life. The goal is not simply to produce students who know their religion, but young Catholics who strive to become, in the words of the textbook, “other Christs.”
Part of the Our Holy Faith series of traditional Catholic religion textbooks, this volume is faithfully reprinted from the original 1960 edition, preserving its text, illustrations, and instructional content without modernization or adaptation. Thorough and orthodox in their presentation of Catholic doctrine, these books have served generations of Catholic children and remain valuable resources for families, schools, and homeschoolers today.
Available in economical softcover and durable hardcover editions.

NOTE: The accompanying Teacher's Manual is available separately. While the student textbook contains the complete course material, the manual provides teaching guidance, suggested activities, sample lesson plans, and evaluations to help parents and teachers present and reinforce the lessons.
Q: How does Eighth Grade complete the course begun in Sixth Grade?
A: Sixth Grade covers the first half of the Revised Baltimore Catechism No. 2, while Eighth Grade reviews that material and develops the second half, concentrating on the Commandments and the Means of Grace. The intervening Seventh Grade course in Bible and Church History helps students see these doctrines within the larger story of salvation. Together, the three volumes provide a comprehensive course in Catholic doctrine and history.
Q: Can my child begin using this textbook without having completed Sixth and Seventh Grades?
A: Yes. Although designed as the culmination of the Our Holy Faith series, To Live Is Christ includes a review of the doctrines studied in Sixth Grade before developing the remaining material. This makes it a practical choice for families entering the series at Eighth Grade, although some additional review may be helpful.
Q: How does the Teacher's Manual help homeschooling parents?
A: The accompanying Teacher's Manual provides objectives for each unit, suggestions for explaining the material, activities and practical applications designed to help students put their Faith into practice, and answer keys for the textbook's end-of-unit tests and discussion problems. These resources help parents guide instruction and assess their children's understanding.
